Geography

The American Revolution began at Lexington and Concord, and finally ended in 1783 with the Treaty of Paris. It is estimated that one third of the men in the colonies lost their lives as a result of the war.

Terrible atrocities were inflicted on the Americans. Colonial prisoners were locked up on British ships and often died of starvation or disease. German mercenaries (Hessians) hired by the British would bayonet captured colonial soldiers.

The Americans were often close to defeat against the better trained and equipped British soldiers. However, the Americans were fighting for a cause; liberty. They also had the advantage of being on their own soil. In addition, many of Britain's adversaries in Europe were anxious to help the Americans. France was the leader in helping the American colonists. However, Holland and Spain also took part in the conflict.

The result of the war was enormous. The United States of America became recognized by the powers of Europe as a free and independent nation. More than two centuries have passed since the signing of the Treaty of Paris. Americans still respect and admire the tremendous sacrifice of those revolutionary heroes who fought and died to bring freedom and liberty to our country.
